There comes a time in life when the body develops more slowly and many of its functions begin to progressively deteriorate, this is known as aging. We all go through this process as the end of life nears, although not all people experience it in the same way since there are factors such as lifestyle, genes or diet that can influence the speed at which we grow old. What is aging and what factors influence this process?
Aging is a biological and natural process in which a set of structural and functional changes occur, which entail a decrease in the adaptability of each of the parts and the body in general. Unlike a disease or an accident that can also affect the body’s adaptive process, aging occurs as a consequence of the action of time.
It is worth clarifying that not all the organs of a person age at the same time. The aging process begins when there is a functional decline in the tissues, in other words, when the cells of the body begin to fail. Among the most common “flaws” scientists recognize the accumulation of genetic defects, the shortening of telomeres, which are nothing more than the ends of chromosomes, and errors in the elimination of defective proteins.
There are also different factors that influence the aging process, such as exposure to pollution and free radicals found in our environment. Genetic inheritance, diet, physical activity and the sleep cycle also play a determining role in how quickly and how we age. In the same way, it is known that stress plays a very important role in physical and brain aging.
